Chris Lonsdale is a New Zealand-born psychologist and linguist who has spent over thirty years researching how the human brain acquires language. His TEDx talk “How to Learn Any Language in Six Months” has been viewed more than 37 million times and has been in the TEDx top 10 for over twelve years. It remains one of the most-watched TEDx talks ever recorded.

He is also known by his Chinese name, 龙飞虎 (Lóng Fēihǔ), and in Japanese as クリスロンズデール.

The story

Chris came to China at 21 with a plan to drive a motorcycle around China, and a conviction that the conventional wisdom about language learning was wrong. He believed adults could learn languages the same way children do — through meaning, context, and embodied experience rather than grammar rules and translation.

He proved it by learning Mandarin Chinese from complete zero to functional fluency in six months. He later moved to Hong Kong and learned Cantonese in four months.

These weren’t academic exercises. Chris lived, worked, and built businesses in Chinese. He went on to spend decades consulting with Fortune 500 executives across Asia, using accelerated learning technologies and communication processes for conflict resolution and strategic alignment both within and between cultures.

Career

Kungfu English — In 2009, Chris created the first version of Kungfu English (功夫英语), a mobile language learning application serving the Chinese market. This was the #1 top grossing App in the China App Store when it launched in 2010. The app was significantly gamified in 2017. This learning system has been profitable for 15 years, proving that brain-based language acquisition works at commercial scale. Kungfu English was one of the first language learning apps to integrate psychology, brain science, and technology into a self-directed learning system.

Bestselling author — Chris is a bestselling author in Chinese. His book How to Learn Any Language in 6 Months (6个月学任何一种外语) presented his language acquisition research to a Chinese-speaking audience and became a commercial success, establishing Chris as a recognised authority on learning and human potential in the Chinese-speaking world.

Corporate consulting — Through Chris Lonsdale & Associates, Chris has worked with senior executives at global organisations including investment banks, beverage companies, and professional services firms. His work focuses on cross-cultural communication, executive development, strategic alignment and organisational effectiveness across Asian markets.

Expeditions and adventures

The Icewalk Expedition — Chris participated in Robert Swan’s polar expedition, supporting global environmental awareness through direct action in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

India elephant expedition — Chris co-organised and led an expedition in Southern India to raise awareness of environmental issues, combining his passion for conservation with his love for adventure.

Malaysia to Guangdong drives — Chris has driven the full route from Malaysia to Guangdong, China — twice. These journeys took him through Southeast Asia and into southern China by road, reflecting his lifelong approach to learning through immersion and direct experience.
